2004-2005 Theatre And Dance Season to Offer Riveting Drama, Lighthearted Comedy, Musical Theatre And Dance

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University once again raises the standards of excellence in the arts by announcing a truly ambitious and well-rounded season of entertainment for the 2004-2005 academic year.

The season will open Oct. 1 with “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the familiar and heart-wrenching true story of an ordinary girl and her family forced into hiding during the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. Adapted for the stage by Albert Hackett, “The Diary of Anne Frank” will run from Oct. 1-10 and will be directed by Dennis Seyer, professor of theatre and dance.

Dance enthusiasts will be delighted to see the professional dance ensemble, Paul Taylor 2. This spectacular group will perform classic works of repertory dance on Oct. 29 at the Rose Theatre.

Transitions 2004, the fall dance concert, will run Nov. 18-20. Coordinated by Dr. Marc Strauss, associate professor of theatre and dance, this repertory event will feature pieces choreographed by various faculty members and students that will blend aspects of modern and classical dance and theatre.

The first play written by popular comedian Steve Martin, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” will delight audiences with its stimulating wit. Set in a bistro in 1904, Einstein meets Picasso, and they exchange views on life, sex, art and science among a motley mix of colorful Parisians. In the New York Times, Vincent Canby says that his (Martin’s) “manner is to so mix the sublime with the ridiculous that they can’t be easily disentangled.” Directed by the equally sublime and ridiculous Dr. Robert Dillon, associate professor of theatre and dance, this show will run Feb. 18-27, 2005.

To close out the season, the Department will be giving it their all with the classic musical, “Guys and Dolls!” One of Broadway’s most hilarious shows, “Guys and Dolls” is a bright musical fable whose charm hasn’t been lost in its 50-plus years of popularity. Based on the book by Swerling and Burrows and with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, this production will be directed by Dr. Kenn Stilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “Guys and Dolls” will run April 5-9 in the Rose Theatre.

Season tickets will go on sale July 1 and will offer patrons a 20 percent discount for the entire season of exciting and endearing entertainment. For more information, please call the Performing Arts Box Office at (573) 651-2265.
