29th Annual High School Art Symposium Opening Jan. 28 in Museum

The Southeast Missouri Regional Museum and the Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University will host the 29th Annual High School Art Symposium “Exhibiting Excellence” Jan. 28-Feb. 18 in the Museum.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,

Jan. 24, 2007 – The Southeast Missouri Regional Museum and the Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University will host the 29th Annual High School Art Symposium “Exhibiting Excellence” Jan. 28-Feb. 18 in the Museum. This exhibit will showcase 73 pieces by promising young artists in their junior or senior year of high school from private and public schools in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois counties. The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the artists from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28.  Forty-two awards will be presented at 3 p.m. First, second and third place and honorable mention awards will be given in the following categories: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fibers and photography.  The artist with the piece determined Best-Of-Show will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and the artist with the piece chosen for the Merit Award will receive a $1,000 scholarship, contingent upon their enrollment at Southeast Missouri State University as an art major. This year’s juror is Dr. Samuel Bishop, professor of art at Southeast Missouri State University. He is an alumnus of Southeast and received his master of art education and doctoral degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Bishop teaches “Perspectives in Art” at Southeast Missouri State University. The Southeast Missouri Regional Museum is located in Memorial Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo.  Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, contact Ellen Hahs at (573) 651-2301 or e-mail ehahs@semo.edu.
