The work of 654 students from 36 area high schools and junior high schools will be displayed at the 62nd Annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair March 6 in the Show Me Center at Southeast Missouri State University.

The fair will feature 442 different projects – 380 in the Junior Division and 62 in the Senior Division. Participating students have explored scientific questions in the behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, earth and space science, engineering, environmental science, math and computer science, medicine and health, microbiology, physics and zoology.

Judging will begin at 1:15 p.m. Exhibits in the Science Fair will be open for public viewing from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Dr. Chris McGowan, retired dean of the College of Science, Technology and Agriculture at Southeast, and Dr. Chelsea Grigery, pediatrician with SoutheastHEALTH, serve as the fair’s co-directors.

“I personally competed in this fair as a high school student, and it afforded me opportunities to build my resume which ultimately allowed me to accepted into medical school,” Grigery said. “I was then able to return to Southeast Missouri to practice medicine and support the community who supported me.

“Universities are placing more emphasis on extracurricular science activities, and students who have participated in such events are more competitive in the selection process for acceptance into these universities,” she added. “I am very excited to help the fair grow and afford students the ability to grow their knowledge in science and technology, help build their future career, and receive recognition for their accomplishments.”
