Alpha Eta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Wins ACE Award at National Conference

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 7, 2005 – The Southeast Missouri State University Alpha Eta chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, was honored with the Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award last weekend, placing it among the top five percent of chapters in the nation.

The award was presented at the Kappa Delta Pi 45th Biennial Convocation Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, Fla. Students, alumni and three Southeast faculty members attended.

Two of the students were presented with national scholarships at the conference.  Amy Bernds of St. Louis and chapter President Brenda Kelch of Cape Girardeau both received the J. Jay Hostetler Student Teacher Scholarship for $500 each.

Students attending were Kelch, Bernds, Rachel Bohnsack of Sedgewickville, Mo., Carrie Baldwin of Cape Girardeau, Krystal Hexamer of Cape Girardeau, Krista Mouser of Jackson, Mo., Kristyna Beine of Jackson, Mo., Caroline Fischer of Bridgeton, Mo., Sarah Martin of Jackson, Mo., and Layne Strattman of Cape Girardeau. Alumni participating were Stephanie Grimes, special education teacher from Charleston, Mo.; and Dana Neninger, special education teacher from Perryville, Mo.

Faculty chapter counselors attending were Dr. Mary Ann DeLine, assistant professor of middle and secondary education; Dr. Julie Ray, assistant professor of elementary, early and special education; and Dr. Kathy Conway, associate professor of elementary, early and special education.

Three officers, Kelch, Bernds and Beine gave a presentation at the conference entitled “Energize Your Kappa Delta Pi Chapter.  Their presentation included a display and handouts of ideas for chapter activities and a brochure about the Alpha Eta chapter.

The three chapter counselors also gave a presentation entitled, “Say Goodbye to Lectures:  Effective Teaching Strategies for Today’s College Classrooms.”

In addition, the chapter had a display about its work on exhibit throughout the conference.
