KENNETT, Mo.,

July 21, 2009 – Bank of America in Kennett, Mo., has awarded a $1,000 grant to Southeast Missouri State University-Kennett to make training materials available to students preparing to be elementary and middle school teachers.

The grant funds have been used to purchase math and science manipulatives – weights, scales, geoboards, rulers, yardsticks, calculators and timers – “big books,” art and bulletin board supplies.

Sam Duncan, development officer at Southeast, says the items will be used by Kennett students training to be teachers, most of whom will remain in the Missouri Bootheel as professional teachers following their graduation.

Southeast’s Kennett campus offers the bachelor of science in elementary education and the bachelor of science in middle school education programs. These offerings are based largely on the need for professionals in these areas in this region, Duncan said.
