“Broadway’s Next H!T Musical” (BNHM) will kick off the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus 2017-2018 Bank of Missouri Touring Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall.
This hysterical production, directed by improve veterans Rob Schiffmann and Deb Rabbai, is the only unscripted awards show. Master improvisers gather hit song suggestions from the audience and create a spontaneous evening of music, humor and laughter.
The musical’s unique structure is a departure from the Touring Series’ standard fare, said Bob Cerchio, assistant director of Southeast’s Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.
“We don’t often feature pure comedy, but this is just that – stand-up comedy with a twist,” he said. “Five actors and a pianist randomly select funny song titles suggested by the audience and build an entire Broadway musical around them.”
The audience votes for its favorite song and watches as the cast turns it into a full-blown improvised musical complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and plot twists.
“I took my family to his show in New York and the comedy talent is amazing,” Cerchio said. “I guarantee the audience will leave the theatre with smiles on their faces.”
BNHM has been seen recently at The Triad, Tribeca Film Festival, and at the New York Musical Theater Festival, among many others.
