Jazz Trumpeter Allen Beeson Featured Performer

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 26, 2012 — The second concert of the 2011-2012 Jazz Series at Southeast Missouri State University will feature trumpeter Allen Beeson who will join the Southeast Studio Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Band Feb. 10.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall, located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.

The concert will feature music for the big band, which traditionally includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section.

Beeson, trumpet

Beeson is a graduate of the University of Missouri and studied with trumpet teachers Purris Williams, Dr. Alex Pickard and Dr. Betty Scott. In 1984, he was introduced to west coast trumpeter Bobby Shew and began studying with him. Beeson has performed with jazz artists Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillispie, Louie Bellson, Bobby Shew, Bill Watrous, Conte Condoli, Pete Christlieb, John Faddis, Marvin Stamm, Conrad Herwig and John Fedchock, among others. He also works regularly with the Jim Widner Big Band and is a faculty member at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where he teaches trumpet lessons and works with the jazz combos and big bands. Beeson has worked with several well-known entertainers, including Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Mel Torme, Bob Hope, Bob Newhart, Jack Jones, Frank Gorshin, John Davidson, The Four Tops, Olivia Newton-John, The Temptations, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Jan & Dean, The Beach Boys and Manhattan Transfer. Beeson is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Studio Jazz Ensemble

The band will take the stage performing the selections “Wind Machine” and “Big Swing Face.” With Beeson, they will perform the standards “Stardust” and “You Go to My Head” as well as a feature by Missouri jazz composer Rick Stitzel, “Festival.” Beeson will also be featured in an original composition by Southeast sophomore Trevor Smith, alto sax, “Melodious Thunk,” intended to reflect the jazz stylings of jazz master Thelonius Monk. Several students will be featured, including Spencer Day, tenor sax, Matt Gates, trombone, and Trevor Smith, alto sax.

Jazz Lab Band

Also performing at the concert will be Southeast’s University Jazz Lab Band, which will also perform with Beeson as soloist. Among their program will be the Clark Terry classic arrangement, “Just Squeeze Me,” and Horace Silver’s “Doodlin’.” The ensemble will feature some very talented students as soloists, including Sam Harris and Steven Watkins, alto saxophone, and Devin Lorenz, guitar. The band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will be playing a variety of jazz compositions.
