Dance St. Louis is a nonprofit organization and one of the oldest and most respected dance presenters in the United States. Since 1966, Dance St. Louis has been bringing extraordinary dance from around the world to St. Louis. Its mission is to provide the St. Louis region with the world’s best dance and to develop an appreciation of dance as an art form. Dance St. Louis fulfills this mission through dance presentation, creation and education outreach.
In its beginning, Dance St. Louis was comprised of a small number of dance enthusiasts headed by Washington University Professor of Dance Annelise Mertz. The group began meeting in each other’s living rooms to figure out how to enable St. Louis residents to enjoy more modern dance performances. From these informal gatherings and an operating budget of just $11,000, Dance St. Louis has burgeoned into one of the cultural treasures of St. Louis.
Dance St. Louis is committed to bringing audiences the full spectrum of dance, including classical ballet, contemporary ballet and modern dance, and ethnic, ballroom, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and cutting-edge artists of every sort. Major companies are presented at The Fox Theatre and the Touhill Performing Arts Center and in collaboration with Washington University’s Edison Theatre Ovations! series. Over the years, Dance St. Louis has raised the curtain on stars such as the Kirov Ballet, Stomp, American Ballet Theatre, Tango X2, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Joffrey Ballet, Riverdance, Martha Graham Dance Company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Tap Dogs, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Stuttgart Ballet, Pilobolus, Bill T. Jones, Sydney Dance Company, David Dorfman Dance and Compañía Nacional de Danza.
Dance St. Louis is committed to fostering new dance. To this end, Dance St. Louis co-commissioned Paul Taylor’s “Black Tuesday,” and the piece premiered at The Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Taylor was on hand for the premiere. In May of 2004, Dance St. Louis produced “Contemporary Moves 2004.” With this unprecedented event, Dance St. Louis commissioned 14 local professional choreographers to create 14 world premieres featuring St. Louis-based professional dancers.
Dance St. Louis’ residency programs have brought companies like Pilobolus Too, Paul Taylor, Taylor 2 and Miami City Ballet into St. Louis schools, colleges and communities surrounding the metro area, including in Warrenton, Wright City, Elsberry, Clarksville, Bowling Green and Cape Girardeau, Mo.
