Dr. George G. and Helen V. Suggs Scholarship Endowed at Southeast

historic preservation 1CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., May 26, 2015 – The Dr. George G. and Helen V. Suggs Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

Dr. George G. Suggs Jr. and his wife Helen V. Suggs of Cape Girardeau made a gift of over $5,000 to establish the award. Their gift was matched through the Faculty/Staff component of the Honoring Tradition – Inspiring Success Comprehensive Campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

The recipient of this renewable scholarship will be a student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University who is a junior or senior history major. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and financial need may be a determining factor in awarding this scholarship.

Dr. George G. Suggs Jr., emeritus professor of history, taught history at Southeast Missouri State University for 31 years. Helen V. Suggs, who earned a Master of Arts from Southeast, taught in the public schools of various states for 33 years. Long-time residents of Cape Girardeau, the Suggs have four children:  Owen (Lisa), Suzanne Mortimer (Allen), Beth McKay (Jerry) and Lorrie Edwards (Dean).
