CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 13, 2010 — Three Southeast Missouri State University jazz ensembles will perform at the Buckner Brewing Company on Thursday, Sept. 23, and Friday, Sept. 24.
The faculty jazz combo, Sultans of Swing, will be the featured performers on Thursday night from 7-10 p.m. and jazz ensembles of Southeast Missouri State University will present an evening of big band jazz on Friday, Sept. 24, from 8-11 p.m.
The Jazz Sultans will feature the piano stylings of Matt Yount, Sam Godwin on bass, Jay Contrino on drums, plus Robert Conger on trombone and Mike Goldsmith on tenor sax. Playing jazz standards, this group is unique in the Cape Girardeau band scene featuring bebop jazz at its finest.
The Studio Jazz Ensemble is a popular musical offering at Buckner’s, especially during Family Weekend, regularly drawing a large crowd of appreciative listeners. This performance will feature classics of big band jazz and highlight several student soloists during the evening. Featured students will include James Eldreth on trumpet, Matt Gates on trombone, Spencer Day on sax, Nate Nall on trumpet and Bryndan Lee on guitar. Also performing will be the Jazz Lab Band from Southeast. This band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will be heard playing some fine jazz compositions.
