A Homecoming week collection at Southeast Missouri State University has netted about 2,140 pounds of food, litter, paper, hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies for the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
The Homecoming week collection is one of a variety of activities encouraging organizations and students to participate in events ranging from service to entertainment during this week’s festivities. Capping these events is Southeast’s Homecoming parade scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in downtown Cape Girardeau.
Each year, collections are organized to support local non-profit and service organizations as part of Homecoming. This year’s committee selected The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. All items were donated by members of student organizations participating in the Homecoming competitions.
As part of the effort, participating groups were encouraged to donate a pound for each person on their Homecoming team. Points towards the overall Homecoming competitions were awarded based on the number of pounds donated to the collection.
Student chairs for the Special Events Committee of the Homecoming Planning Committee, which hosted the drive, were Jordan Cushman and Sierra Heil. Other Special Events Committee members were Chelsea Lacey, Bailey Turnbo, Courtney Krieg, Destiny Borage, Tiffany Anthony, Precious Thomas and Darnell Schnell.
Participating organizations making the donation to the Humane Society possible were: Alpha Phi, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Chi Omega, Sigma Chi, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Chi, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Nu, Theta Xi, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Delta Theta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta and Pi Kappa Alpha.
