CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 10, 2012 – Two jazz bands will be featured from 8-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Buckner Brewing Company in downtown Cape Girardeau.
“This is a popular musical event at Buckner’s, especially during Family Weekend, and is expected to draw a large crowd of appreciative listeners,” said Robert Conger, director of jazz studies at Southeast.
The evening will begin with tunes played by Southeast’s jazz combos featuring Trevor Smith (alto sax), Kyle Clay (bass), Spencer Day (tenor sax), Matt Gates (trombone) and Bryndon Lee (guitar). Beginning at 9 p.m., the two jazz ensembles of Southeast Missouri State University will present two great sets of jazz big band music.
The Jazz Lab Band will perform first.
“This excellent band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will be heard playing some fine jazz compositions,” Conger said.
Featured students in this ensemble will be Sam Harris (alto sax), Steven Watkins (tenor sax), Adam Devine (trombone), Devin Lorenz (guitar), Sean Kenney (drumset) and Ashley Lacy (piano).
The second set will feature the Studio Jazz Ensemble, the premiere jazz performing group at Southeast. This show will feature classics of big band jazz and highlight several student soloists during the evening. Featured students will include Spencer Day (tenor sax), Matt Gates (trombone), Aaron Fox (piano), Trevor Smith (alto sax) and Cedric Portis (drumset).
Buckner Brewing Company is smoke free until 10 p.m. each evening. The evening event is free and open to the public. For further information, contact Conger at (573) 651-2398.
