CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 19, 2011 — Two Southeast Missouri State University jazz bands will be featured at the Buckner Brewing Company in downtown Cape Girardeau Sept. 30 as a part of Family Weekend events.
“This is a popular musical event at Buckner’s, especially during Family Weekend, drawing a large crowd of appreciative listeners,” said Robert Conger, professor of music at Southeast.
The event is free and open to the public, and continues until 11 p.m. Buckner’s is located at 132 N. Main.
The evening will begin at 8 p.m. with tunes played by Southeast’s jazz combos featuring Trevor Smith on sax, Kyle Clay on bass, Ethan Flood on sax, Matt Gates on trombone and Dan Boemeke on guitar. Beginning at 9 p.m., the two jazz ensembles of Southeast Missouri State University will present two sets of jazz big band music.
The first ensemble will be the Studio Jazz Ensemble, the premiere jazz performing group at Southeast. This show will feature classics of big band jazz and highlight several student soloists during the evening. Featured students will include Spencer Day on sax, Matt Gates on trombone, Tim Hanak on piano, Trevor Smith on sax and Chris Whited on drums. The second set will feature the Jazz Lab Band. This band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will be heard playing several jazz compositions.
