CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 11, 2012 – Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music is proud to present its annual Jazz Series season opener, “Meet the Band,” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.

This exciting concert will feature members of the two jazz ensembles as soloists plus a special performance from Southeast’s jazz combo.

The concert will open with the Jazz Lab Band, which will play jazz in an assortment of styles, from the Latin “Children of Sanchez,” made popular by Chuck Mangione, to the jazz ballad, “My Romance,” which will feature lead alto saxophonist Sam Harris and pianist Ashley Lacy.

“This younger group plays with plenty of fire and brimstone,” said Robert Conger, director of jazz studies.

Featured performers in this ensemble include Lacy (piano), Adam Devine (trombone), Harris (saxophone), Stephen Watkins (saxophone), Devin Lorenz (guitar) and Sean Kenney (drumset).

Immediately following the Jazz Lab Band performance, the spotlight will turn to Southeast’s newest ensemble, the Southeast Jazz Combo, which will perform a few short compositions. Highlighting this performance will be saxophonists Spencer Day and Trevor Smith, trombonist Matt Gates and Chris Whited on drum set.

Southeast’s Studio Jazz Ensemble has performed at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival and received accolades from their tour of schools in the St. Louis area as well as from local concerts at the River Campus. The ensemble is currently planning a trip to the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival in February.

The Studio Jazz Ensemble will feature many varied jazz compositions from some of the greats in big band jazz. “Front Burner,” from the Count Basie library, “Stolen Moments” from the great Oliver Nelson, and “Oleo,” penned by the jazz immortal, Sonny Rollins, will be performed in this concert. Student soloists will include Day (saxophone), Smith (saxophone), Gates (trombone), Cedric Portis (drumset) and Kyle Clay (bass).
