Jazz Series Presents Final Concert of Year

April 15, 2009– The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music announces its Jazz Series season finale, “From Fusion to Latin.” This performance will take place on Thursday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall located in the Cultural Arts Center at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.

The Studio Jazz Ensemble returns to the stage after their acclaimed performance at the Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival Concert in February.   This ensemble also was involved in setting a high standard at last summer’s international performance for the opening of the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival with more than 8,000 fans in downtown Edinburgh, Scotland, last July.

Organizers of the jazz festival were thrilled with the enormous power and versatility of the band and commented that “the Studio Jazz Ensemble was by far the favorite act of the weekend,” according to Robert Conger, director of the Jazz Series.

This concert will showcase a variety of styles including Latin salsa, samba, hip-hop, as well as traditional swing from the Count Basie library.   Featured musicians will be Matt Gates, freshman music major from Dexter, Mo., Ryan Blankenship, freshman music major from St. Louis, Mo., Geoff Huff, sophomore music major from Granite City, Ill., and Spencer Day, freshman music major from St. Louis.

Also performing at the concert will be the University’s Jazz Lab Band. This band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will be playing a variety of jazz compositions. Southeast alumnus Sean Brown will direct the band. Their portion of the program will be quite exciting as well and feature many Southeast students on a variety of instruments.
