CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 5, 2012 — Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will present its final concert of the 2011-2012 Jazz Series, “Hooked on Jazz!” which will feature Marie Meunier, jazz vocalist, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall, located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast’s River Campus.
Meunier, a sophomore music major at Southeast, will perform with both bands during this concert, which will feature music for the big band, which traditionally includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section.
Studio Jazz Ensemble
Southeast’s premier big band, the Studio Jazz Ensemble, returns to the stage to play some of their favorites, including “Hay Burner,” from the Count Basie Orchestra, “Cherry Juice,” from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, “Reunion at Newport,” from the Woody Herman Orchestra, and “Blue Moan,” from the great jazz composer, Don Sebesky, and which features Spencer Day on tenor saxophone. Meunier will be featured in the famous jazz standards, “Nice Work If You Can Get It” and “Almost Like Being in Love.” Other featured students include soloist Spencer Day, senior music major; Chris Whited, sophomore music major; saxophonist Corey Easley, graduate psychology major; guitarist Dan Boemeke, senior music major; saxophonist Trevor Smith, sophomore music major; trombonist Matt Gates, senior music major; and bass player Kyle Clay, sophomore music major.
Jazz Lab Band
Southeast’s Jazz Lab Band will also perform during the concert. This band is comprised of both music and non-music majors and will play a variety of jazz compositions, including “Beantown Blues, Spain,” from the Chick Corea Orchestra, “Theme from Sesame Street,” from the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, and “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Meunier will also sing with the Lab Band, giving her rendition of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “For Once in My Life.” Other featured performers will be Sam Harris, sophomore computer science major; guitarist Devin Lorenz, freshman music major; tenor sax player Stephen Watkins, freshman music major; and trumpeter Anthony Jackson, freshman music major.
