CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 16, 2012 – Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music’s faculty jazz combo, the Jazz Sultans, will offer a jazz performance on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7-10 p.m. at the Buckner Brewing Co. in downtown Cape Girardeau.
This jazz quintet has been together for three years and performs bebop jazz at its finest with a diverse collection of tunes from Duke Ellington to Sonny Rollins to Dizzy Gillespie. The group is composed of Southeast faculty members, including Matt Yount on piano, Robert Conger on trombone, Mike Goldsmith (tenor sax – faculty member at Mineral Area College), Jay Contrino on drums, and Southeast alumnus Sam Godwin on bass.
“Our audience at Buckner’s is quite diverse, but they are very enthusiastic about listening to jazz in Cape Girardeau,” Conger said. “The Sultans play about three or four times per semester, and we always have a big crowd of excited jazz enthusiasts who love to listen.”
Admission to the performance is free, and all are welcome to attend. The Buckner Brewing Company is smoke-free during this performance, and patrons are encouraged to sample some of Buckner’s fabulous menu during the show. For further information, contact Robert Conger at (573) 651-2398.
