Jazz Sultans’ Final Performance of Spring Semester April 1 at Buckner’s

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 21, 2011 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music’s faculty jazz combo, the Jazz Sultans, will offer a jazz performance from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at Buckner Brewing Company in downtown Cape Girardeau. This jazz quintet has been together for three years and performs bebop jazz at its finest with a diverse collection of tunes from Duke Ellington to Sonny Rollins to Dizzy Gillespie.  The group is composed of Southeast faculty including Matt Yount on piano, Robert Conger on trombone, Jay Contrino on drums, and Southeast alumnus Sam Godwin on bass.  Mike Goldsmith (tenor sax) is a faculty member at Mineral Area College and has been performing as a “regular” for about one year.

“Our audience at Buckner’s is quite diverse, but they are very enthusiastic about listening to jazz in Cape Girardeau,” Conger said.  “The Jazz Sultans play about three or four times per semester and we always have a big crowd of excited listeners,” he added.

Admission to the performance is free, and all are welcome to attend.  The Buckner Brewing Company is smoke free during this performance. For more information, contact Conger at (573) 651-2398.
