CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 22, 2012 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music’s faculty jazz combo, the Jazz Sultans, will perform from 7-10 p.m. on First Friday, March 2, at the Buckner Brewing Co. in downtown Cape Girardeau.
The jazz quintet has been together since 2006 and performs bebop jazz at its finest, with a diverse collection of tunes from various jazz composers, including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. The group is composed of Southeast faculty members Matt Yount, piano, Robert Conger, trombone, Jay Contrino, drums, and Southeast alumnus Sam Godwin, bass. Mike Goldsmith, tenor sax, is a faculty member at Mineral Area College who has been performing as a regular with the group over the last few years.
“We play straight-ahead jazz for the patrons in Buckner’s about once a month, which is a fun performance for all of us,” said Conger. “We all have day jobs related to music, but these nights are special, because there is no script, and we play tunes for our own satisfaction.”
Admission to the performance is free, and all are welcome to attend. The Buckner Brewing Co. will be smoke-free during these hours.
