Kent Library Conducting Survey of Original Civil War Materials

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Aug. 29, 2011 — Special Collections and Archives in Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University is conducting a survey of original Civil War source materials held by libraries, museums, historical societies, genealogical societies, archives, individuals, State Historic Sites or other organizations and institutions.

Materials of interest include original letters, journals, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks, artifacts and other ephemera from this period of history. The survey area includes the following Missouri counties: Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Washington, Reynolds, Iron, Madison, Bollinger, Perry, Cape Girardeau, Wayne, Carter, Ripley, Butler, Stoddard, Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot and Dunklin; and the following counties in Illinois: Randolph, Jackson, Union, Alexander and Pulaski.

The project is a collaborative effort between Kent Library’s Special Collections, the Center for Regional History and the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University, the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center and the Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. It is being funded by a digital imaging grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library and Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
