Lewon to Receive Mattingly Award in Historic Preservation

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 19 2010 — The Historic Preservation Association, the Department of History, and the Historic Preservation program at Southeast Missouri State University will honor Danielle Lewon as the recipient of the 2010 Arthur H. Mattingly Award in Historic Preservation.

Lewon will receive the award and will be the guest speaker during the Historic Preservation Association Spring Banquet scheduled for Saturday, April 24. Lewon will share her experiences as a preservationist titled, “In the Trenches: Preservation in America’s Shrinking City.”

The Arthur H. Mattingly Award is awarded to a graduate of the Department of History’s Historic Preservation Program who has shown credit to the program through distinguished professional achievements in the field of Historic Preservation.

Lewon earned a bachelor of science degree in historic preservation from Southeast Missouri State University and completed a master of science degree in historic preservation from Eastern Michigan University. She is currently a cultural resource specialist II at the Mannik and Smith Group in Detroit, Mich., assisting the Detroit Historic District Commission and manager of the Detroit Commercial Façade Improvement Grant Program. She also has had experiences with the Ohio Building Restoration, Section 106 Reviews in Toledo, Ohio, and the Felix Valle State Historic Site in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

Lewon has volunteered in activities for the Design Committee for Southwest Detroit Business Association Commercial Façade Revitalization Program and the Detroit Festival of the Arts held by the University Cultural Center. She also has given presentations to promote the importance of historic preservation through presentations covering topics from Art Deco Gas Stations in Detroit to tax increment financing to cemetery conservation. Lewon believes, “the ideas of preservation cause small waves within the community that grow into pride and appreciation for our historic homes and neighborhoods.”
