Lute, Voice Recital to be Performed Nov. 8

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 24, 2005 — The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present a concert of Renaissance music for voices and lute at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 in Old St. Vincent’s Church in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Admission to the concert is $7 at the door, $6 in advance for seniors, and $5 in advance for students.

The Department of Music is bringing two special guest artists to campus from England to present this concert as well as workshops and classes for Southeast music students.  Sasha Johnson Manning and Holly Marland are professional musicians based in Manchester, England.  Each appears regularly on BBC radio as well as with choirs and ensembles in England and in Europe. Manning is an internationally acclaimed composer specializing in vocal and choral works.  Her compositions are heard regularly in churches and chapels throughout England and have become better known in recent years in this country.  Marland is on the staff of the Royal Conservatory in Manchester where she is coordinator of professional development.  In that capacity, she assists both faculty and students in professional matters, especially establishing a professional performing career.

The two women have sung and recorded with numerous early music ensembles in England but have only recently begun performing the lute song repertoire as a duo.  Their trip to the United States marks their first appearance in this country performing this repertoire, and the concert in Cape Girardeau will be only their second American appearance in this format.

The concert will feature songs from Elizabethan England composed by John Dowland, Thomas Morely, Thomas Campian and others.  In addition, the duo will perform instrumental works for lutes and recorder.  Manning and Marland will be joined by Southeast music faculty member Jeffrey Noonan playing Renaissance lutes.

Tickets are available through the Performing Arts Box Office.  Please call (573) 651-2265 to order advance tickets. They also may be purchased in the Forrest H. Rose Theatre lobby or at the door the night of the concert.  Please note that discounted tickets are available for advanced sales only.
