Monument Preservation Workshop Planned for June 30 in Ste. Genevieve

Southeast Missouri State University and the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Genevieve will sponsor a one-day workshop in the cleaning and preservation of stone monuments June 30 in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

Gary Keshner of Creative Sculpture and Restoration of Lee’s Summit, Mo., will give a slide presentation from 10 a.m. to noon in the basement of the Hotel Ste. Genevieve at Main and Merchant streets. Lunch will be available for $8 in the hotel dining room.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Keshner will give hands-on demonstrations on the care of monuments in Memorial Cemetery on Fifth Street in Ste. Genevieve. The event is being held in conjunction with the eighth annual Historic Preservation Field School in Ste. Genevieve, sponsored by the Department of History in partnership with the Missouri Division of State Parks. Sixteen students are enrolled in the field school, which began on June 15 and runs through July 8.

Other activities during the field school include a photography workshop, archaeological excavations, tours, discussions and a paint analysis workshop.
