CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Nov. 30, 2009 – The Southeast Missouri Music Academy encourages shoppers to kick off the holiday season by attending the Music Academy’s annual book fair at Barnes & Noble located at the West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Saturday, Dec. 5.
A percentage of the purchases that day will benefit the Music Academy. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., shoppers will be greeted by festive music performed by students and faculty involved in the Music Academy. Suzuki Strings will perform at 11 a.m., and the Southeast Brass Quintet will play at 1:30 p.m., followed by various groups of students and faculty entertaining until 2:30 p.m. At that time, Voce Festiva, a women’s vocal group, will take the stage until 3 p.m.
Voce Festiva is a women’s vocal ensemble made up of altos Hays Hendricks and Leslie Jones and sopranos Stephanie Fridley, Mary Mims and Lori Shaffer. Voce Festiva’s repertoire ranges from music of the masters to motown, but is best known for smooth sonorous acappella singing. The ensemble has performed with Southeast Missouri State’s University Choir and has premiered arrangements by Steve Hendricks, Stephanie Fridley and Mary Mims. Voce Festiva invites those participating in the book fair Dec. 5 to experience “Random Acts of Caroling” at the conclusion of their performance.
This year’s holiday book fair will feature several new, fun activities. Monique Johnson will read stories with musical themes at noon in the Children’s Books area. The stories are geared for ages pre-school through second grade. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., children up to age 15 may participate in a Scavenger Hunt in the store by visiting the CD/DVD area to pick up a scavenger hunt list. Those who complete the “hunt” will be entered for a drawing for a Barnes & Noble gift card.
The Book Fair also will feature a gift-wrapping table where shoppers can have their purchases wrapped for a small donation to the Academy. Musicianship Class projects on the Baroque era also will be displayed in the store throughout the day.

Dec. 5 will go to fund the Academy’s scholarships for financially-disadvantaged students. Patrons need to simply mention “Music Academy” when making their purchases. Everything in the bookstore except for gift cards qualifies for the fund raiser – including café purchases, said Rebecca Fulgham, director of the Southeast Missouri Music Academy.
The Southeast Missouri Music Academy offers musical instruction to over 220 students, ranging from age three to 93. The teachers, which include music teachers and Southeast Missouri State University students, faculty and staff, offer private instruction and group classes.
