CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 10, 2013 – There is still time to register for Southeast Missouri State University’s annual summer Art Academy Workshops.

The Art Academy Workshops offer engaging and fun learning experiences in a wide variety of media designed to enrich one’s personal vision. Workshops are offered for ages 6 through adult.

The following workshops still have openings:

Prints Galore! Fun! Fun! Fun!, for ages 6-9, will be offered July 8-12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children will enjoy using their imagination to create stamp, stencil and relief prints. The instructor for this workshop is Susan Lane. The workshop will be held in Serena Building, Room 312.

Fabulous Fairy Tales and Fables, for ages 10-15, will be offered July 8-12 from 1-4 p.m. This workshop is inspired by a quote by Albert Einstein: “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” Everyone has a favorite fairy tale or fable story. Students will explore how illustrators throughout the world have shaped our view of these classic stories. They will then use colored pencils, inks and watercolor to create illustrations of their own favorite fairy tales, fables or legends. Students should come prepared with their favorite story or maybe even one they have written. The instructor for this workshop is Andrea Schneider. The workshop will be held in Serena Building Room 312.

Sculpture, for ages 10-15, will be held July 22-26 from 1-4 p.m. Students will investigate multiple sculpture techniques using a variety of art media to create three dimensional artworks. The instructor for this workshop is Debbie Bollinger. It will be held in Serena Building Room 312.

Large Scale Drawing, for ages 16 to adult, will be offered June 17 and18 from 6:30-9 p.m. Students will expand drawings into life-sized images and spaces. No drawing experience is required. Students will cover basic drawing skills such as gesture drawing, positive/negative shape and space, composition, value tones, line sensitivity and perceptual accuracy with University Drawing Professor Kathy Smith. This workshop will be held in the River Campus, Room 042.

Portable Paintings, for ages 16 to adult, will be held July 8-10 from 1-4 p.m. Participantsare invited to join in this fun, informative workshop focusing on the tradition of modern graffiti and street art. Students will examine the properties of color and composition, develop personal symbolism and text elements and investigate the materials of acrylic paint and static vinyl. The workshop will culminate in a final “portable painting,” ready for public display. This workshop will be taught by University Art Professor Emily Booth and will be held in the River Campus Room 039.

From Cover to Cover, for ages 16 to adult, will be offered July 15 and 16 from 6:30-9 p.m. Students will create a 6-inch-by-9-inch hand stitched book or journal with University Art Professor and Department Chair Caroline Kahler. The workshop will be held in the River Campus Room 034.
