Dr. Alisha Youngblood Ortiz, associate professor in the Department of Accounting at Southeast, will serve as the interim chair of the Department of Accounting, effective Aug. 1. Ortiz replaces Dr. Leisa Marshall who asked to return to full-time teaching responsibilities in the department.
“I look forward to Alisha joining the leadership team of the Harrison College of Business and very much appreciate the leadership Dr. Marshall provided the Department of Accounting over the past three years,” said Dr. Gerald McDougall, dean of the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.
Under Dr. Marshall’s leadership the Department of Accounting made significant curriculum changes, implemented enhancements to extra-curricular activities sponsored by the Department of Accounting and was instrumental in establishing a MOS certification process for students wishing to add a distinguishing attribute to their academic accomplishments. Marshall was a strong spokesperson for the department and worked very effectively with Partners in Progress which serves as an advisory council to the program in accounting.
Ortiz joined the Harrison College of Business with the start of the 2009 fall term, moving from an appointment as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Ortiz was promoted the rank of associate professor effective with the 2015-2016 academic year.
“It goes without saying that Alisha presents a record of significant accomplishments in the area of teaching, service and professional growth,” McDougall said. “The move to the interim chairperson position is Dr. Ortiz’s first administrative appointment, but I am confident that the Department of Accounting will benefit from, and continue to grow, under Dr. Ortiz’s leadership. She will approach this new role with a strong set of academic values and a personal commitment to student success.”
