Past Southeast Presidents Leading Homecoming Parade Oct. 26

Homecoming2012

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 21, 2013 – Floats decorated to represent decades past will travel through downtown Cape Girardeau Saturday, Oct. 26, as part of Southeast Missouri State University’s annual Homecoming parade.

The theme for Homecoming is “Honoring Tradition-Inspiring Success.”

This year, Dr. Bill Stacy and Dr. Kala Stroup, past presidents of the University, are serving as parade marshals, and are returning for the re-dedication of Academic Hall. Stacy was the University’s 12th president, serving from 1980-1989. Stroup was the 14th president and the first female president, serving from 1990-1995.  “They were chosen in keeping with the overall Homecoming theme of ‘Honoring Tradition-Inspiring Success’ because, as former Southeast presidents, they embody some of the University’s rich traditions,” Jay Wolz, the director of Alumni Relations, said.

The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Capaha Park and travel east on Broadway, turning south on Main Street and ending near Hutson’s Fine Furniture. The parade is one of the largest in the region. Joanna Shaver, coordinator of the parade, said she has already received 115 entries.

The parade will feature floats decorated by student organizations and members of the community, marching bands, Man and Woman of the Year finalists, the Wells Fargo coach and horses, Vets Corps, Alumni Merit Award winners and others.

“The Homecoming Planning Committee felt that it was important to mirror the University’s theme of ‘Honoring Tradition-Inspiring Success.’ The best way to do that was to honor how the world has changed in the past century. The larger floats will be focusing on fads or world events from their chosen decade. The smaller floats will focus on pop culture or inventions from their decade,” Shaver said.

Every decade from 1920 to 2009 will be represented in some way, whether by decorative float, community members or marching bands, according to Shaver.

Eight marching bands are performing, including the Oran Marching Eagles, the Oak Ridge Marching Jays, the Arcadia Valley Marching Tigers, the Clearwater high school band, the Shawnee Junior and Senior High Marching Redskins, the Delta High School band, the Advance Marching Band and the Southeast Marching Band.
