Public Invited to Films, Forums Concerning Mascot Issue

In recent months, several organizations connected with Southeast Missouri State University, including the National Alumni Council, Student Government and the Booster Club Board, have voted to recommend to the University administration that the nickname/mascots of Indian and Otahkian be retired.

In light of these recommendations, a Mascot/Nickname Study Committee was appointed with representation from the National Alumni Council, Student Government, the Booster Club, the University Athletics Department, students (including student athletes), the Clerical-Technical-Service Employee Staff Council, Professional Staff Council and Faculty Senate.

Community members can read more about the mascot/nickname study and rank the list of mascot/nicknames at http://www2.semo.edu/urelations/mascot/.

The Mascot/Nickname Study Committee has scheduled several information sessions for the public to give input and for the committee to answer questions concerning the nickname/mascots.

Anyone interested in a discussion with the committee members concerning the decisions and research on this issue and anyone wishing to give public comments concerning the nickname/mascot are advised to attend the following public events:

  • A public forum with the members of the Nickname/Mascot Study Committee during Common Hour at noon, Wednesday, April 28 in the University Center Ballroom and again at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 12 in Academic Auditorium.
