CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 13, 2008 — The Department of Recreation Services at Southeast Missouri State University has announced that Travis Vancil, a senior from Crystal City, Mo., has been named Student Employee of the Month for February.
Vancil, an exercise science major at Southeast, was honored for his work as a lifeguard in the new Student Aquatic Center and as a fitness instructor with the department’s group fitness program.
“He has done outstanding work in the new Aquatic Center,” said Troy Vaughn, director of Recreation Services.
Vancil has been instrumental in managing the facility in the early morning shift beginning at 5:30 a.m. in the Student Aquatic Center and has developed the trust and rapport of patrons during these times.
As one of the only male fitness class instructors, Vancil also has a following with patrons for the classes he teaches. He is frequently assisting other instructors with their classes and has filled in on shifts when others cannot teach.
“He has shown significant leadership and skills this year. He has been tremendous in the Aquatic Center,” Vaughn added.
Vancil has plans on attending San Diego State University and studying biomechanics after graduating from Southeast in May. His dream is to work within the Olympic Training Center in Southern California after completing his education.
