Recreation Services Announces Lifeguarding Courses

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 14, 2008 — In conjunction with the new Student Aquatic Center, the Department of Recreation Services at Southeast Missouri State University is offering Lifeguard Certification and Recertification Classes this spring for students and community members before the summer swimming season starts.

Two regular American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses and one recertification class has been planned. This lifeguard certification course is a 30-hour class, and certain swimming skills and abilities must be performed prior to the start of class. Recertification courses also require several prerequisites and last six hours. Information regarding the prerequisites can be obtained by visiting the department’s Web site at www.semo.edu/recservices. Classes are open to those 15 and older, and classes are open to the first 10 who register and pay fees for each class. The classes are as follows:

Basic Lifeguard Certification – Class I (Class Maximum – 10 individuals)

March 27-30 (Thursday and Friday: 4-9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 7 a.m.-6 p.m.)Student Recreation Center–North, Student Aquatic Center (SAQ), 750 New MadridCost:  –Verified Southeast students: Free, but must pay a $35 book fee          –Affiliated Member: $125 per person (book included)          –Non-Affiliated Community Member: $150 per person (book included)

Basic Lifeguard Certification – Class II (Class Maximum – 10 individuals)
