CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 21, 2011 – The Clerical-Technical-Service Employee Staff Council and the Professional Staff Council have now joined as partners in the “Redhawks Rally Against Hunger” canned food drive during Family Weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at Southeast Missouri State University.
The drive will benefit the Southeast Missouri Food Bank and the food bank for Joplin (Mo.) tornado relief. Student Government, the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the President’s Office are also co-sponsors of the effort.
Food will be collected at 16 locations on campus in addition to the Southeast vs. Eastern Illinois soccer game at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30; at the Southeast vs. Eastern Illinois football game at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1; and at the Southeast vs. SIU-Edwardsville soccer game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. All games will be held at Houck Stadium.
“We have a history at Southeast of students serving the community,” said Dr. Dennis Holt, vice president for enrollment management and student success. “This is an extension of our community service commitment. In our current economic situation, we have a very large unmet need for food in our community and in Joplin because of the tornado. So as a way of underscoring our commitment to community service and in recognition of our fellow Missourians in Joplin, we are conducting this canned food drive.”
Items may be placed in collection bins across campus and at entrances on both the north and south sides of Houck Stadium. Those making a donation at the games will receive a ticket for free popcorn.
