CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Sept. 22, 2008 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music is proud to present a Faculty Showcase Series performance in October featuring outstanding University educators who have performed both nationally and abroad.
The performance will be held in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall in the Seminary Building on Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
Leslie Jones, Contralto, Matt Yount, Piano, Assisted by Timothy Schmidt, Bass-Baritone, Oct. 12, 3 p.m.
Featured on this program will be music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (concert aria, “Ombra Felice”), Johannes Brahms (duets for alto, baritone, and piano, Op. 28), Arthur Honegger (set of songs, “Quatre Chansons pour Voix Grave”), Libby Larsen (contemporary American composer, b. 1950 – song cycle, “Love after 1950”), and Xavier Montsalvatge (Spanish composer, 1912-2002, “Cinco Canciones Negras”).
“There are a number of published ‘concert arias’ by Mozart,” said Leslie Jones, associate professor of music. “Many were written as substitutes for arias in an opera that were tailored to the abilities of a specific singer, but there are few for the contralto voice. This piece has beautiful melodies in several sections, some of which are dramatic.”
The Brahms duets are some of the few vocal chamber works for the combination of contralto and baritone voices.
