Rutha E. Moore Endowed Scholarship Established at Southeast

StudentTeaching 2014CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Dec. 11, 2015 – The Rutha E. Moore Endowed Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

In honor of her grandmother, Dr. Julie Ray, chair of Southeast’s Department of Elementary, Early and Special Education and her husband Dennis Ray of Jackson, Missouri, made a gift of $5,000 to establish the scholarship. Their gift was matched with an additional $5,000 through the faculty/staff component of the Honoring Tradition – Inspiring Success comprehensive campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and financial need. The scholarship will be awarded to a senior completing their student teaching during their last semester and majoring in elementary education, early childhood education or exceptional child education.

Mrs. Moore grew up in the Delta region of northeast Arkansas.  She raised three children and opened her home to countless others who were in need.  While she was unable to pursue an education beyond the age of 13, she passed a lifetime of wisdom to her children and grandchildren.   As an educated woman, Dr. Ray says she is grateful for the opportunities her education has given her, which her grandmother never had.  This scholarship is a way to honor her grandmother’s life and to provide assistance to a future teacher who has a financial need during the student teaching semester.
