CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Aug. 31, 2012 – A new director and business manager have been named to lead the Show Me Center at Southeast Missouri State University.
Wil Gorman of Omaha, Neb., project manager with DNC-Sportservice at Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona and Rangers Ballpark of Arlington, Texas, is the new director. He will begin his duties Sept. 17.
Shannon Buford of Cape Girardeau, educational director at Metro Business College in Cape Girardeau and former marketing director of the Show Me Center, has been named business manager. He began his new position Aug. 27.
Gorman has more than 20 years experience in facility management. A 1994 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Gorman was employed four years with Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority in Omaha, Neb., where he served as stadium manager for TD Ameritrade Park, a new 24,000-seat, $143 million baseball stadium, which he assisted in building.
Prior to that, Gorman was senior director of Brewers Enterprises in Milwaukee, Wis. In this position, Gorman focused on existing and creating new non-game day event business for Miller Park. He also has been stadium manager at Tempe Diablo Stadium Complex in Tempe, Ariz. He also has served as a retail manager with Sportservice in Busch Stadium in St. Louis, spring training ticketing manager with the California Angels Spring Training and general manager of the Tempe Rafters in the Arizona Fall League.
Gorman holds a Bachelor of Science in recreation from Southeast Missouri State University and a certificate from the International Association of Assembly Managers.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to return and lead the Show Me Center into its 25th year of operation,” Gorman said. “Being part of such a great venue is a dream come true, as my wife and I are graduates of Southeast Missouri State University and are very happy to get back to our roots.”
Gorman replaces David Ross, who retired earlier this year. As director, Gorman will be responsible for the overall management, success and daily operations of the Show Me Center and its programs.
“The Show Me Center has an excellent team of support staff, and we are thrilled to have Wil return to Southeast Missouri State University and the Cape Girardeau community to lead this venue”, said Kathy Mangels, vice president for Finance and Administration.
The Show Me Center is a joint venture between the University and the City of Cape Girardeau. The 7,000-seat events center, which opened in 1987, provides quality concerts, sporting events, top-notch family entertainment and banquet, convention and meeting facilities. The Show Me Center also is the home court for the Southeast Redhawks men’s and women’s basketball teams.
The director of the Show Me Center maintains relationships with external promoters to develop conferences, special events and other programs; promotes the Show Me Center and its events, including marketing and promotional campaigns to enhance the Center’s positive image; provides leadership in the development and coordination of events, including event solicitation; negotiates and executes contracts; directs concession and box office operations, including maintaining sound cash handling and auditing procedures; oversees day-to-day operations and supervises facility staff; ensures preventative maintenance is handled at the facility; and establishes and manages an annual budget and develops long-range plans to ensure its future success.

Buford has served as educational director of Metro Business College since 2011, assisting a diverse student population in preparing to enter the workforce. Prior to that, he served six years as marketing director of the Show Me Center. He also has been southeast Missouri regional director of the American Heart Association.
Buford holds a Bachelor of Science in communications with a major in advertising and a minor in marketing from Southeast Missouri State University.
The Show Me Center business manager is responsible for the business affairs and financial management of the multi-purpose facility and its programs. The business manager is responsible for maintaining operating budgets for all Show Me Center units; supervising the Box Office ticketing operations, concession and merchandise operations; overseeing the day-to-day financial operations, including the payment and processing of all invoices and the generation of purchase orders; generating in-house financial reports; negotiating event contracts; maintaining sound cash handling and auditing procedures; managing event final financial closure documents; working as a management team member for all major events; establishing and ensuring compliance with overall University operating policies and procedures; coordinating business functions with other University departments; and working with the public and event promoters.
“I’ve missed the adrenaline rush that working in live entertainment provides, and I am excited to rejoin the dedicated team and continue to play a part in the outstanding events that take place at the Show Me Center,” Buford said. “The Show Me Center has always had a very dedicated team of professionals who work tirelessly to bring outstanding events to southeast Missouri and the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. I am proud to have the opportunity to rejoin them and lend my experience to continuing that tradition.”
