Southeast Alumni to Play Free Concert for Homecoming Weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 21, 2005 — As part of Homecoming weekend at Southeast Missouri State University, the Department of Music will present a free Alumni Recital featuring music for flute and classical guitar at 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in Brandt Hall, Room 205.

The concert will feature The Avila Duo, comprised of Southeast alumni Kristi Benedick (flute) and Sven Rainey (guitar).  Friday’s program presents contemporary works from North and South America, including duos by the Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla and the American composer Libby Larsen.

The Avila Duo is based in Las Vegas where Benedick is a doctoral student at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV).  She completed a master of music degree at Illinois State University in 2004.  Rainey recently completed a master of music degree in guitar performance at UNLV.  Both players hold undergraduate degrees in music from Southeast Missouri State University.  The Avila Duo recently participated in the Chamber Music Institute at the University of Nebraska, the first flute/guitar duo to be invited to this prestigious workshop.

Flutist Kristi Benedick has numerous performance credits to her name, including winning concerto competitions in both Missouri and Illinois.  While at Southeast, she studied with Paul Thompson.  Rainey’s studies include private work with Ricardo Cobo at UNLV as well as master class studies with Ana Vidovic, Julian Grey and William Kanengiser.  He studied with Jeffrey Noonan when at Southeast.  In addition to their active performance schedules, both musicians teach privately in the Las Vegas area.
