Southeast Business Plan Competition 2017 Winners Announced

The Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Catapult Creative House at Southeast Missouri State University have announced the winners of the inaugural Southeast Business Plan Competition (SBPC) held during a Common Hour program April 26.

The Southeast Business Plan Competition was an opportunity for Southeast undergraduate and graduate students in any area of study to develop real-world skills by researching a business idea and developing a business plan for a concept of their choice. Students could compete as individuals or teams.

The winners are as follows:

First place:

AIA Group – Antonet Kurukulasooriya of Negombo, Sri Lanka; Anna Ward of Marble Hill, Missouri; Jingshi Yao of Shenyang, China.

Second place:

Sharp Sounds – Stephen Brownlee of Imperial, Missouri; Xue Zhong of Shenyang, China; and Chen Zhao of Zhangijakou, China.

Third place:

Rage Cape – Francine van de Bijl of Haarlem, Netherlands; Jake Fields of Old Monroe, Missouri; Michael McGowan of Ballwin, Missouri; Stone Selsor of Jackson, Missouri; and Jordin Wyatt of Jacksonville, Illinois.

“The SBPC was a great opportunity to use skills that I’ve learned throughout my degree program at Southeast and to network with business owners in the community,” said Anna Ward, of the AIA Group.

AIA Group developed a mobile drink match app aimed at using individuals’ preferences to suggest drinks and provide background information, such as when the drink was first created and its history. Smart Sounds offered group music lessons in a relaxed classroom type setting, which would increase returns for the company and teacher while decreasing the cost to the student. Rage Cape offered stress relief for customers who rent space in their facility to release their frustration through smashing and bashing objects in a safe environment.

A panel of University and community professionals judged the 10 submissions based on how complete, feasible and attractive to investors the business plan was. The top three teams presented their ideas and answered questions from the audience during the program.

“We were highly pleased with the caliber of the analysis performed by our students in this business plan competition,” said Dr. Judy Wiles, director of the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “The written reports and presentations made by the winning teams demonstrate effective entrepreneurial thinking and planning by Southeast students.”
