The Southeast Missouri State University Press will release “Gifts of Oneself: Art and Writings by James H. Hamby” Nov. 4. To celebrate the launch, a reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. Nov. 4 in the University Center Program Lounge.
The book contains selected artwork and writings by James H. Hamby, a Southeast football coach from 1958 to 1968 and philosophy professor at then Southeast Missouri State College. Hamby passed away in 1986.
Hamby gave up golf for bird watching in 1976 and produced watercolor drawings of the birds, adding short philosophical reflections or commentaries to the drawings. Over the next six years, Hamby created around 300 beautiful, color drawings and watercolors of birds, and gave them away as gifts to friends and family.
The book was edited by Roxanne Dunn, Special Collections and Archives librarian in Southeast’s Kent Library, and Dr. Robert W. Hamblin, professor emeritus of English at Southeast. It is compiled with an introduction by the late Dr. Roy Dawson, former professor of English at Southeast, and an afterword by Kim Hamby Loper and Kip Hamby.
Several original pieces of Hamby’s bird art will be on display throughout the evening, along with commentary from Hamby’s friends and family. “Gifts of Oneself” will be available for purchase at the event. Refreshments will be provided.
