Southeast Music Academy Host Annual Book Fair at Barnes and Noble

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,

Nov. 20, 2008 – The Southeast Missouri Music Academy at Southeast Missouri State University invites you to “give the gift of music” this holiday season by attending the Music Academy’s annual book fair at Barnes & Noble located at the West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Book fair hours are 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Events planned throughout the day include music performed by Academy students from 10 a.m.–3 p.m., an art exhibition and a book signing.  A percentage of purchases come back to the Academy to support scholarship funds and academy programs. Patrons need to simply mention “Music Academy” at the time of purchase or present a book fair voucher, which can be found at www.semomusicacademy.org. Everything in the store except gift cards qualifies for the rebate – including café purchases.Rebecca Fulgham, Music Academy director, says, “Book fair funds will enable the Music Academy to continue offering financial assistance to many students who wish to enhance their lives through music. During these difficult times, the gift of music can provide a calming effect and an emotional outlet.  Studies also prove that music promotes self-esteem, creative thinking, problem solving and analytical thinking, while encouraging creativity.”

Art Exhibition

The day’s events also will include an art exhibition titled “The Artist Book,” a collection of handmade books designed as artwork by Southeast Missouri State University students enrolled in the University Studies, first year seminar, “Artist as Citizen in Contemporary Society.” This exhibition is one of many critical and creative thinking exercises students participate in as part of the seminar.

Book Signing  In addition, Carol McDowell, Southeast professor of music education, will be available to sign her book, The History of the Band Program at Jackson High School, Jackson, Missouri, 1920-1998, published in 1999. This 220-page book describes the events that led to the establishment of the Jackson band program and the band festival.  Newspaper clippings from previous band festivals as well as a pictorial history of the band from the Jackson High School yearbooks from 1920-1998 are included.
