CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Oct. 21, 2009 – Women who would like to start a business, currently own businesses, are leading business careers or want to be inspired to lead more entrepreneurial lives are invited to attend the WIN! Workshop Nov. 14 on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
The event, which is hosted by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Robert A. Dempster Hall. The workshop is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.
“The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is dedicated to increasing the capacity for entrepreneurship in southeast Missouri, and business women are extremely important contributors to our business environment,” said Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of the Center. “According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, women-owned businesses contribute nearly $3 trillion to our national economy and create or maintain 23 million jobs. This research illuminates the true economic contributions of women-owned firms, and we want to inspire women to put their ideas into action,” Stapleton added.
Locally, businesses owned by men far outnumber businesses owned by women, according to Gina Harper, training coordinator for the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
“We see that trend changing,” Harper said. “Currently, about 60 percent of the graduates of our Operation Jump-Start entrepreneurial training classes are female. The WIN! Workshop will help us keep up that momentum by providing training, tools and inspiration especially for women.”
WIN! features fast-paced discussions and activities, motivational messages from successful entrepreneurs and networking opportunities, according to Harper. Workshop topics, which are led by some of the region’s foremost experts on entrepreneurship, include gaining a competitive advantage, balancing a fast-paced life with health, and strategies for victory. Keynote speaker Jennifer Hendrickson, president of Hendrickson Business Advisors, will deliver a motivational presentation on winning at business. Hands-on activities like speed-networking will create a fun atmosphere, and participants will have a chance to win door prizes.
The WIN! Workshop will kick off Global Entrepreneurship Week at Southeast Missouri State University. Participants in a variety of activities will join millions around the world in a growing movement of entrepreneurial people, to generate new ideas and to seek better ways of doing things. Countries across six continents are coming together to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week, an initiative to inspire people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity.
Women-owned businesses are welcome to set up a small display to showcase their products and services. The cost to display is the donation of one door prize. Businesses that would like to help sponsor WIN! with a cash donation will be featured on all printed materials. Registration for a display table or sponsorship is required by no later than Nov. 10.
A pre-WIN! cocktail mixer, featuring a cash bar and free hors d’oeuvres, will spotlight a brief guest presenter on
Nov. 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in Kem Statuary Hall at the Wehking Alumni Center on the Southeast campus. Participation in both events is encouraged, but not required.
