CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 7, 2012 – Kenneth W. Dobbins, president of Southeast Missouri State University, today thanked Governor Jay Nixon for his announced amendment to his recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2013 that restores $40 million in funding to the state’s public colleges and universities.

Dobbins said the governor’s proposal to reduce the previously announced 12.5 percent state appropriations reductions was very welcome news and that all those supporting Missouri higher education will appreciate the governor’s commitment to keeping higher education affordable.

“We appreciate Gov. Nixon’s amendment to his budget and are very pleased he was able to dedicate $40 million from the proposed settlement to reduce the cuts to higher education. I believe that with this announcement, Southeast Missouri State University will continue to work on reducing expenses and increasing revenues where possible, but I am sure we will be able to hold our increases in tuition costs to no more than the CPI (Consumer Price Index).”

The governor’s budget amendment must be approved by the state legislature, and Dobbins said he was hopeful the legislators would support the governor’s proposal.

“We know there were many state legislators who felt that higher education was in need of additional state appropriations and were not supportive of the 12.5 percent reduction. We are very hopeful they will support the governor’s amendment and will appropriate the $40 million for higher education so Southeast and colleges and universities throughout our state can continue to offer a quality higher education at affordable costs.”
