CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 15, 2015 — Southeast Missouri State University senior Parker Butler of East Prairie, Missouri, picked up his bags and ventured to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the summer to intern with the national office of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha.

Butler, president of Southeast’s Interfraternity Council, is working for the Departments of Harm Reduction and Education where he evaluates incident reports from various chapters to examine contributing factors and compiling documents linking to risk management within chapters. He also is filtering through operating documents to ensure they are up-to-date and applicable. By working with these departments, he gets the opportunity to assist in preparing for the fraternity’s Stead Summer Leadership Seminar.

“Personally, I think the biggest benefit [of the internship] is professional, hands-on experience in the higher education setting,” said Butler, an advertising major with a management minor at Southeast.

In the future, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in higher education administration with a focus on student affairs. He hopes to start his career at a university on the east coast and someday return to Southeast as a Student Affairs administrator.

“Student development is a really interesting topic, and I have learned a lot about how that works from the standpoint of a college fraternity at the international level,” Butler said.

Butler says he has enjoyed experiencing a well-organized and professional environment with supervisors who have experience in the development of collegiate men.

“It’s been incredible getting to know all of my fraternity’s management and getting that mentorship from them,” Butler said.

He also has enjoyed the opportunity to explore Indianapolis.

“Indianapolis is truly an amazing city,” he said. “It is the biggest place I’ve ever spent an extended about of time. And I have loved it. There is no end to the things you can do here, and the other interns and I have really enjoyed ourselves getting to know the city.”

In addition to being in Lambda Chi Alpha and president of the Interfraternity Council at Southeast, Butler is a member of Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, All University Judicial Board and the Presidential Transition Team for Dr. Vargas. He also serves as a Presidential Ambassador and a past Student Government Senator and is a student employee in the Office of the President at Southeast.
