CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 15, 2009 — Southeast Missouri State University will celebrate Family Weekend Sept. 19-20 with a variety of events for all ages.
“Family Weekend will be an opportunity for the campus community to welcome the families and friends of our students,” said Michele Irby, Family Weekend coordinator and director of Campus Life and Event Services. “There will be a variety of events and activities planned to allow families to participate in the Southeast experience,” Irby said.
Family Weekend is a long-standing event beginning in 1977. Originally “Parents’ Weekend” for the families of football players, the event grew over the years into a weekend of activities for everyone related to students and the University.
The weekend is traditionally held in the fall semester and allows Southeast students to make the adjustment into the new environment. Irby says Family Weekend allows families to visit their student; meet roommates, friends and instructors; tour facilities and attend University-wide events.
Kids of all ages can kick off the weekend with a family picnic and fair on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the patios and lawn outside the University Center and Kent Library. Chartwells will serve a picnic lunch, and families can enjoy a variety of games and activities, including large inflatables, airbrush face painting and a Snakes Alive exhibit sponsored by the Student Activities Council. Departments and organizations from across campus also will be on hand to provide information and help students and their families learn more about the services available to them.
Following the picnic, families can support the Redhawks at a pre-game tailgate party from 4 to 6 p.m. before the football game against the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University. Tailgaters can enjoy hotdogs and beverages, as well as music by “Flashback,” followed by a pre-game warm-up by the Golden Eagles Marching Band, the Southeast cheerleaders and the Sundancers. A tailgate tent will be set up just north of the Student Recreation Center-South and across from Houck Stadium for the party.
After the tailgate party, the Redhawks will take on the Panthers at 6 p.m. Reserved seats are $9, general admission seats are $8, youth (ages 6-18) are $4 and children (6 and under) are free. University students can get in free with their student ID. Tickets may be purchased by calling (573) 651-2113 or toll free (866) SEMO-TIK.
