MALDEN, Mo., Sept. 4, 2009 — Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Southeast On Tour 2009” in Malden on Sept. 20. The event will be held at 2 p.m. in the Bootheel Youth Museum located at 700A N. Douglass St.
Rhonda Weller-Stilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, said, “We are looking forward to bringing Southeast Missouri State University theatre and dance to the Bootheel. We saw this as an opportunity to recruit students in the area, to develop audiences, and we wanted to bring musical theatre to people who could not come here [Southeast] or had never been exposed to it.”
This performance will focus on Southeast’s musical theatre program, with Southeast students performing vocal numbers from their fall musical production, “Little Shop of Horrors,” and other class pieces.
Weller-Stilson said, “We hope to attract new patrons, new students, and make people aware of our great program, the River Campus and the University.”
This free touring event, along with additional upcoming performances in the fall and spring will promote and showcase Southeast’s Department of Theatre and Dance throughout the region.
“This allows us to have the opportunity to perform and outreach to the people of Malden, Kennett, Dexter, Poplar Bluff and others,” Weller-Stilson said. “I believe it will be a wonderful outreach and recruiting tool for us.”
The event will showcase the accomplishments and talent of Southeast’s theatre and dance students and faculty.
“We are excited about taking our show on the road. We hope it is the start of an outreach program that we will be able to do every year,” said Weller-Stilson. “Depending on its success, we will look at other communities as well.”
