Student Volunteers Needed to Help with Sandbagging

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 26, 2011 — The Cape Girardeau Office of Emergency Management has issued a call for help with sandbagging at Dutchtown, Mo., a community 10 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau.

Student organizations and individual students willing to serve by filling sandbags to construct temporary levees should report to the Department of Public Safety, in front of the Show Me Center where they will ride a shuttle to the Dutchtown staging area.

Four-hour shifts are recommended and will continue for the next 24 hours, but will conclude after dark.  Shuttles will leave from the Show Me Center at noon and at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, making return trips at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m.  Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for working outdoors.

Recent heavy rain and flood waters have closed roads and threatened local residents.
