Student Volunteers Needed Wednesday, April 27, to Help with Sandbagging

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 27, 2011 — The Cape Girardeau Office of Emergency management has issued another call for help with sandbagging today, Wednesday, April 27, at Dutchtown, Mo., a community 10 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau.

Student organizations and individual students willing to serve by filling sandbags to construct temporary levees should report to the Department of Public Safety, in front of the Show Me Center, where they will ride a shuttle to the Dutchtown staging area.

Four-hours shifts are recommended. Work will conclude after dark. Shuttles will leave from the Show Me Center at noon and at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, making return trips at 2,4,6 and 8 p.m. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for working outdoors.

Recent heavy rain and flood waters have closed roads and threatened local residents.
