CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Aug. 31, 2009 — The Southeast Missouri Studio Jazz Ensemble will perform at Buckner’s Brewpub on Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the “Tour of Missouri” bicycle race which finishes in downtown Cape Girardeau that afternoon.
This ensemble is led by Robert Conger, director of jazz studies in the Southeast Department of Music.
The afternoon will begin with a jazz combo formed by select members of the big band. This group will perform some jazz classics complete with their own brand of improvisation. Featured musicians in the combo are Matt Gates of Dexter, Mo., (guitar), Ryan Blankenship of Florissant, Mo., (trumpet and piano) and James Eldreth of Dexter, Mo., (trumpet).
The Studio Jazz Ensemble, which is the premier jazz band of Southeast Missouri State University, will follow with a couple of sets of big band favorites which will get your toes tapping. Tunes on the setlist include: “One O’Clock Jump,” “Cottontail,” “NightTrain” and “Blue Bossa.” Featured musicians in the combo and the big band will include Spencer Day of Ballwin, Mo., (tenor sax), Geoff Huff of Granite City, Ill., (alto sax), Matt Gates of Dexter, Mo., (trombone), Jarred Harris of Cape Girardeau (bass), Nate Nall of Cape Girardeau (trumpet) and Brandon Harvey of Florissant, Mo., (drumset).The performance begins at 6 p.m. after the second leg of the “Tour of Missouri” is completed. Although admission to Buckners is free, downtown parking will be extremely limited that evening. Shuttle buses will run from the Show Me Center and the mall.
