CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 24, 2011 — The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation at Southeast Missouri State University is proud to announce the 13th installment in its Distinguished Lecture Series at 6 p.m. March 2 at the Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Center.

JD Tanner will present the lecture “Sustainability in Outdoor Recreation.”

He is a graduate of the Recreation program at Southeast Missouri State University and received his master of science in education in recreation at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. As an educator, he has taught rock climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, and leadership courses at Southeast and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He also taught for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics as a traveling trainer.

Tanner has traveled extensively throughout the lower 48 states for Leave No Trace, sleeping in a tent for more than 250 nights a year for three years. During his Leave No Trace career, it was not uncommon to find him teaching environmental ethics to a group of girl scouts in Yakima, Wash., one day and then discussing the same topic with world class climbing guides on Mt. Ranier the next day. After retiring from life on “the road,” Tanner began working for San Juan College in Farmington, N.M., where he runs the outdoor recreation program. He also volunteers on the Association for Experiential Education Rocky Mountain Region Council, instructs for the Wilderness Education Association, and moonlights as a hiking guide writer/photographer for Falcon Guides. When not working, you can find him “peak-bagging” or hiking with his girlfriend and dogs.

Tanner will speak at the Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Center, located in Cape County Park North along Highway 61 North.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University.
