University Communications and Marketing Wins 14 Local ADDY Awards

Southeast Students Honored with 16 Awards in Competition

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri, Feb. 23, 2015 – The University Communications and Marketing department at Southeast Missouri State University won 14 local ADDY Awards at the annual American Advertising Awards (AAA) Show Feb. 20.

University Communications and Marketing

University Communications and Marketing was honored with four Gold, five Silver and five Bronze ADDY Awards. The department also received a “Best of Show” award in the print division for the “Fall for Dance Poster” produced for Southeast’s River Campus.

“It is extremely gratifying to know that our work is recognized as outstanding in a region with so many talented individuals and organizations,” said Jeff Harmon, executive director of University Communications and Marketing.

The winners were selected from 140 print, interactive, broadcast and multi-media advertising projects, all created, published or aired in the Cape Girardeau; Paducah, Kentucky; and Harrisburg, Illinois, markets between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2014.

Gold, Silver and Bronze ADDY Awards received and the category in which they were earned are as follows:

Department of Art

In addition, Southeast’s Department of Art won a Gold and a Bronze ADDY Award. The awards and the categories in which they were earned are as follows:

“When Rhonda Weller-Stilson gave me the design assignment for the River Campus Summer Arts Festival 2014 poster, and said, ‘just do your thing,’ any hesitancy I felt faded away. I love it,” said Louise Bodenheimer, professor and area head of graphic design and illustration in Southeast’s Department of Art. “The Rock, Paper Scissors exhibition catalogue design for the Department of Art was very similar. I had complete freedom and Chairperson Caroline Kahler was highly supportive of my efforts. I had a lot of fun designing both.”

Students

Sixteen student ADDY Awards – Four Gold, six Silver and six Bronze — were presented to students from Southeast Missouri State University.

Addy students“Dr. Sandy Sen (Southeast assistant professor of marketing) and I are extremely proud of the teamwork efforts of the marketing and graphic design students who worked with clients from St. Louis and Southeast,” Bodenheimer said. “Additionally, this semester, mass media students under Dr. Fred Jones (Southeast professor of mass media) were included in the mix with the creation of a video component. The collaboration each semester has proven invaluable to our students’ growth in professionalism, to their introduction to the complexities of working as teams and to the meeting of creative challenges.”

Prior to the awards show, Nancy Bray was honored with the American Advertising Federation’s Silver Medal Award, which recognizes men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Bray began her career as a teacher, and was instrumental in the creation of the multidisciplinary Department of Mass Media at Southeast Missouri State University. In 1980, she became one of the first women in Southeast Missouri to work in healthcare marketing. During her 27-year career as director of marketing and communications at SoutheastHEALTH, Bray developed the first full-service healthcare marketing department in the area.

Local gold AAA winners are eligible to compete in the second level of the three-tiered American Advertising Awards Competition, the District 9 competition. The district judging will be conducted in March and includes entries submitted by other AAF clubs throughout Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska. District 9 winners will be eligible for the ultimate competition, the national ADDY, presented in June every year by AAF. As a three-tiered national competition with 40,000 entrants overall, the national ADDY Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing creative excellence and the very best advertising worldwide.

Tri-State Advertising & Marketing Professionals is a non-profit organization made up of communications professionals in the Cape Girardeau, Paducah and Harrisburg areas. Tri-State AMP is affiliated with the American Advertising Federation and the Ninth District, AAF.
