CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 10, 2005 — The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3838, recently presented a $2,000 check to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation to continue funding the Vernon L. Pruitt V.F.W. Restricted Scholarship.
The scholarship was established through the Foundation in 1998 with a gift from the Missouri V.F.W. Post 3838 in memory of Pruitt. He was Post 3838’s only commander, holding the position at the time of his death.
The 2004-2005 scholarship award was given to Billy Griffin of Bernie, Mo. Griffin, who, in May, earned a bachelor of science degree from Southeast with a major in industrial technology and an emphasis in construction management and design. He was among 12 students who graduated this spring with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
To be eligible for the V.F.W. Restricted Scholarship, students must hold sophomore or higher student status and be either a U.S. military veteran who was honorably discharged or the son or daughter of a U.S. military veteran who was honorably discharged. Applicants must be students from Southeast Missouri State University’s 24-county primary service area who have achieved an overall 2.5 grade point average and a 3.0 grade point average in their major. This level of achievement must be maintained to be eligible to reapply for the scholarship along with substantiating continuing financial need. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee.
