Wind Symphony Performing Children’s Concert for Kelly Elementary School Students

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 27, 2006 — The Southeast Missouri State University Wind Symphony under the direction of Barry Bernhardt, director of bands, will present a Children’s Concert for more than 400 Kelly Elementary School students from Benton, Mo., March 15.

The concert is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. in Academic Auditorium on the Southeast campus. This concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will be a multi-disciplined event in which students from Benton will have the opportunity to hear, in advance, recordings of the music to be performed by the Southeast Wind Symphony, and will create artwork representing the musical program. Selected students will be allowed to sit among the members of the Wind Symphony as they perform. Discussions of the musical program along with discussions of the instruments in the Wind Symphony will be led by Bernhardt. This will be an interactive concert for both the elementary students as well as the University students.

The instructor of music at Kelly Elementary is Matthew Martin, who holds bachelor’s degrees in music education and trumpet performance from Southeast.  Martin is currently a graduate student in the Department of Music, working on his master of arts degree in music education at Southeast.
